Competitions

Collegiate Solo, High School Solo, High and Low Horn Mock Auditions, Quartet, Composition, and Jazz Competitions (more detailed information including rules and repertoire for each competition is listed at the bottom of this page). Competitors may enter multiple competitions.

Information on the competition requirements for each of the competitions being held at the 2016 NEHW is listed below the sign-up form.

In order to secure your place in a competition, you must pay a $10 entrance fee. This fee is non-refundable. Workshop registration and the online competition entrance form must be completed and all fees (workshop registration and competition entrance) must be received by January 5th, 2016 in order to be entered in the competitions.

STEP 2: Pay the competition entrance fee. 

Competition entrance fees are $10/competition. You may sign up for a maximum of two (2) competitions.

 

You may pay the competition entrance fee online using a credit card or echeck (select the "Competition Entrance Fee" option) by using IUP's online "Marketplace" <--- COMING SOON! 

 

You may also pay your registration fees by mailing in a personal check or money order. Please note that all mailed checks and money orders must be received by January 5th, 2016 in order to secure your place in the competition.

Competition Guidelines:

HIGH SCHOOL SOLO COMPETITION

Northeast Horn Workshop High School Solo Competition

The winner of the competition will perform on the Sunday afternoon recital and will also participate in one of the master-classes.

Eligibility

  • Students entering this competition must currently be enrolled in high school (grades 9-12) or in a home-schooling program and under the age of 19 as of January 22, 2016.

  • Competing students must not have performed professionally under full-time contract, or have previously been offered such employment by virtue of winning a full-time professional audition.

Rules

  • All entrants must register for the workshop and pay the competition fee by January 5, 2016. 

  • Approximate times of performance will be communicated either by phone or email to entrants no later than one week prior to the competition.

  • Competitors will perform repertoire from the listed selections.

  • Entrants should be at the audition venue, warmed-up and ready to play, 10 minutes in advance of their scheduled times.

  • Each solo will be performed unaccompanied. A pianist will be provided for the winner, should one be chosen, for a performance on the final concert on Sunday, January 24, 2015; the winner will also be given the opportunity to participate in one of the master-classes or sessions during the workshop.

  • Students may sit or stand to perform. 

  • Competitors are not required to perform from memory. 

  • Entrants using music must perform from legal printed copies. Use of photocopies or scanned copies is grounds for dismissal from the competition.

  • Students need not supply judges with score copies.

  • The judges reserve the right not to choose a winner, should the quality of the performances merit.

  • Judges are professional hornists. Judges' decisions on all awards and eligibility will be final.

  • Parents or guardians may sit in the room during their child's performance, but may not stay for the performances of other students.

  • The general public will not be invited to observe this competition.

COLLEGIATE SOLO COMPETITION

The winner of the competition will perform on the Sunday afternoon recital and will also participate in one of the featured master-classes.

Eligibility

  • Students entering this competition must be enrolled at a college or university as an undergraduate or graduate student, or within one year of completion of their last formal program of education.

  • Competitors must be under the age of 29 as of January 22, 2016. 

  • Competing students must not have performed professionally under full-time contract, nor have been previously offered such employment by virtue of winning a full-time professional audition.

Rules

  • All entrants must register for the workshop and pay the competition fee by January 5, 2016. 

  • Approximate times of performance will be communicated either by phone or email to entrants no later than one week prior to the competition.

  • Competitors should be at the audition venue, warmed-up and ready to play, 10 minutes in advance of their scheduled times. 

  • All competitors shall perform selections from the indicated repertoire.

  • Each entrant will perform unaccompanied. 

  • Students may sit or stand to perform. 

  • Entrants are not required to perform from memory.

  • The first round is closed to general public, but the second round will be open for public viewing.

QUARTET COMPETITION

The winner of the quartet competition will perform on the final Sunday recital. They will also have the opportunity to perform with one of the headlining artists in concert.

Eligibility

  • Students entering the quartet competition must be enrolled at a college or university as undergraduate or or graduate students, or within one year of completion of their last formal program of education.

  • All quartet members must be under the age of 29 as of January 22, 2016. 

  • Competing students must not have performed professionally under full-time contract, nor have been previously offered such employment by virtue of winning a full-time professional audition.

Rules

  • All four performers in the quartet must register for the workshop and individually pay the competition fee by January 5, 2016.

  • Approximate times of performance will be communicated either by phone or email to entrants no later than one week prior to the competition.

  • Quartets may sit or stand to perform. 

  • Quartets are not required to perform from memory. 

  • All quartet members must perform from legal printed copies (if not memorized). Use of photocopies or scanned copies is grounds for dismissal from the competition. 

  • Each quartet must supply the judges with one score of each piece performed. 

  • The judges reserve the right not to choose a winner, should the quality of performances merit. 

  • Judges are professional hornists. Judges' decisions on all awards and eligibility will be final.

  • The winners of the competition, should one be chosen, will be offered the opportunity to perform at the final concert on Sunday, January 24, 2016, as well as part of one other concert during the workshop.

  • The competition is not open to the public.

Repertoire

  • Quartets should prepare no more than 12 minutes of music, including changing time between movements and pieces.

  • Quartets must, within this time slot, perform 2-3 works or movements of contrasting style, with ONE of the selections coming from the list below:

  • Judges may stop the performance when the time reaches 12 minutes.

HIGH AND LOW HORN MOCK AUDITION COMPETITIONS

The winners of the competitions will participate in a master-class or session at the Workshop.

Eligibility

  • Students entering this competition must be enrolled at a college or university as an undergraduate or graduate student, or within one year of completion of their last formal program of educationgraduate student.

  • Competitors must be under the age of 29 as of January 22, 2016.

COMPOSITION CONTEST

Northeast Horn Workshop Horn Ensemble Composition Contest

Important Dates:

Submission Date:                                                                                      Postmarked by December 15, 2015

The Northeast Horn Workshop Horn Ensemble Composition Contest is open to composers of all ages. Works should be 8 minutes or less and be written for a horn ensemble of 6-8 performer. The winning composition will be published by a professional publishing company and be performed by an ensemble of faculty performers at one of the recitals at the Northeast Horn Workshop January 22-24, 2016.

Competition Guidelines:

  • All materials must be postmarked by December 15, 2015.

  • Compositions must be for horn ensemble of 6-8 performers.

  • Compositions must be 8 minutes or less.

  • One winner will be chosen by the competition committee and notified by January 1, 2016.

  • Electronic submissions must include a score and parts in .pdf format.

  • A recording of a live performance or generated through music notation software in .mp3 format should also be included.

  • Email or Dropbox submissions are preferred. However, mailed submissions will be accepted. Mailed recordings may be submitted on a CD or flash drive in .mp3 format.

Jazz Competition

The winner of the Jazz Competition will perform on the Jazz Horn concert on Saturday, January 23, 2016.

 

Eligibility

  • Students entering this competition must be enrolled at a college or university as an undergraduate or graduate student, or within one year of completion of their last formal program of educationgraduate student.

  • Competitors must be under the age of 29 as of January 22, 2016. 

  • Competing students must not have performed professionally under full-time contract, nor have been previously offered such employment by virtue of winning a full-time professional audition.
